Just When You Thought It Couldn't Get Any Hotter....

Just when you thought it couldn't get any hotter... for us it did! 

After dinner, Sunday evening, I noticed that the house was starting to feel particularly warm.  Now, yes - it topped out at 103 outside on Sunday afternoon, so a hot day it was.  However, as I glanced at our thermostat - it read 80, when it was set on 75!  As I informed my husband, he remarked that he had noticed that our central air had been having trouble keeping up since it had been so hot recently.  Not good!  I then glanced out of our dining room window & noticed that the central air pump was not running!  How was it not running when the house was 5 degrees hotter than the thermostat was set on?

So we started going through the process of self-diagnosing the issue (yes, it's the cheapest way)!  We checked the breakers & the fuses.  They were all fine.  We inspected the actual pump itself to ensure that it wasn't frozen over, which it wasn't.  We checked the air filter and it wasn't sparkly clean but wasn't in need of replacing yet.  This exhausted all that we knew to check.  So we just said a little prayer that it wouldn't get much hotter....

As we were putting our little bug down to bed at 8pm - her room was so hot & stuffy.  Now her room is usually a little warmer upstairs than our downstairs usually stays.  We have known that we either need an additional heat pump for our second story or a better one that has more power, or whatever it is that they need to keep a house equally cool on all levels!  It was really hot in her room though.  So we made the call to go to my parents.  Luckily, they live only a little under an hour away. 

It was the right call because when we got the Jeep all packed up & we were ready to go, the Jeep still read 90 at 8:30pm and the house had then crawled up to 82 - so we didn't anticipate the house cooling during the night hours!  It was also the right call because I would not have gotten a lick of sleep that night.  I would have been worried about our bug upstairs & worried that she was too warm and uncomfortable.  I would have been miserable laying in bed in the sweltering house.  I love Summer, I lot hot weather.  However, I like to spend those hot days by some source of cooling water!  I also like AC!  I am not a turn the air off & open your windows & cut the fan on type of gal!  I won't freeze you out of our house if you come visit, but during the day we keep the air on comfortable 75 and then drop it to a nice 70 when we go to bed! 

My husband was very brave and stayed so he could call the HVAC guy the next morning.  He ran the ceiling fan & a box fan in our bedroom over night - so he at least had a breeze, even though the house was at 85 when he woke up yesterday morning!  His family has always taken a lot of sailing trips - so he has slept in hotter temps than that but it made me even more so happy that bug & I had retreated to my parent's house!

By the time the HVAC guy arrived late yesterday afternoon - the house was 92!  My husband had even left all the blinds almost all the way closed to prevent any direct sunlight from entering the house & heating it up even more!  He tried his best to work from home but the extreme heat in the house made it difficult to work because our laptop kept overheating!  It took about 30 mins for the guy to diagnose & fix our heat pump issue.  We are thankful that it was that quick.. even though it wasn't cheap.  He left with a warning that our central air pump was the most basic on the market & would probably crap out on us in the next couple of years.  What great news! lol!  Not a huge surprise, though, considering other issues we've encountered with basic models of some appliances & features of our home, that the guy who built it cut corners with!

By the time bug & I returned from my parents last night, the house had dropped down to 84 by bug's bedtime and then 80 by the time we went to bed.  It was a 'cool' 80 though & not the muggy 80 from the night before when the air wasn't working.  Thankfully, the house continued to cool overnight & was back to our normal temp by the time we woke up this morning.

I had seen many status updates from Facebook friends over the past few weeks exclaiming that they were without A/C.  For each one of them, I had said a little prayer that their A/C would be fixed quickly & also a little thank you that we were lucky enough to have A/C during this never-ending heat wave we've been under.  I had a little worry in the back of my head knowing that our central air pump didn't cool as well as it should upstairs but just crossed my fingers & hoped for the best!  Now that we're on the cooler end of the part failure - I am thankful that the HVAC guy could fit us in the next day & that it was a part that he could fix on the spot & didn't have to order anything that would have left us sweltering for a few more days!
